Soul, R&B, and hip-hop for a movie set in the early 1900's? Sounds like a Diddy concept, but he only allowed one track on here (the 112 track with Faith Evans). It does not quite match up, but the song and artist selection is interesting, especially those by L.V., Adriana Evans, Big Bub (of the group Today), Rahsaan Patterson, and Erykah Badu. This is meant to be Music Inspired By The Motion Picture so while for the most part unrelated, it holds up as a compilation of what was going on in music ten years ago.
Martika (born Marta Marrero on May 18, 1969 in Whittier, California) is a female pop singer actress from the 80s and 90s. She began her career in an uncredited role as one of the orphan girls in the 1982 film 'Annie' which led to her being cast on the children's television program 'Kids Incorporated' as Gloria and stayed on the show until 1986. In 1984, Martika appeared in Mr. T's motivational video 'Be Somebody.or Be Somebody's Fool!' Which featured future singers Shanice Wilson and Stacy 'Fergie' Ferguson (who also starred on 'Kids Inc' with her).
The second single 'Toy Soldiers' became Martika's biggest hit to date, topping the Billboard Hot 100 for 2 weeks. The song also peaked at #5 on the U.K.
Singles, topped the charts in New Zealand and was successful in Australia, Canada, the Netherlands, Germany, Ireland, Norway, Spain, Sweden & Switzerland. The song's chorus featured Martika's former 'Kids Inc' castmates such as Stacy Ferguson, Rahsaan Patterson, Renee Sands and later 'Kids Inc' members Jennifer Love Hewitt & Devyn Puett on backup vocals. The fourth single 'Water' peaked at #59 on the U.K. Singles chart, but failed to make the charts in the United States. The last single 'Alibis' was released, but didn't make the charts at all. She also recorded a track entitled 'Monday' for a new solo album which according to the website was on its way. In 2005, Oppera released their self-titled sophomore album and Martika promoted the album with a Borders bookstore tour.
